Wood usually contains Carbon and other hydrocarbon compounds in some form or the other .
As on burning , oxidation occours , carbon changes to carbon -di - oxide .
But wood is not completely carbon alone , so it leaves residue impurity(30 g ), while the rest changes to gas and can't be seen.
If a pure carbon substance is burnt( like diamond 100% carbon)
no residue whatsoever is left .
ie 400 gms diamond on burning leves nothing !!!
