Question:
what's a good magazine to read regarding car maintenance and repairs?
I want to know the basics so that I don't get screwed by mechanics and so that I know what my car needs and what it does not need.

Read "Auto Repair for Dummies."
I wouldn't recommend attempting to do some of the things it teaches, but it does give you a very good broad overview of the basics, and much of the specifics when it comes to the most commonly encountered issues.

go to your local book store, part store, or library. the best book Ive used for repairs is a Chilton's manual. they have them for many makes and models

Go to Advanced or any auto parts store and get the chilton manual for your vehicle that will at least give you an idea of locations and such.
