How many quarts of transmission fluid does a 1978 turbo 400 transmission hold? I bought a 1978 GMC Pickup. The previous owner removed the radiator and left the transmission lines lay at a downward angle and transmission fluid leaked out. The dipstick isnt the proper one and I need to find out how many quarts i should put in it to get the tranny to engage without overfiling. I dont want to burn the tranny up. So i put 5 quarts in it until the awfully short looking dipstick said full. I ran through the gears and slowly ,while in drive, applied very little acceleration. It didnt attempt to engage so I stopped. I need to atleast have a general idea of the fluid capacity for a transmission in this 78 GMC. Please a close guess would be appreciated.

I would guess that the total fluid it holds is about 10 quarts, and that only 5 quarts would drain out when the bottom pan is removed and the filter replaced in a routine transmission fluid and filter change.

the turbo 400 holds 12 quarts if the converter is empty, i dont think thats your case. on a fluid change it should take 5-6. to fill it start the engine and idle in park untill normal operating temp is reached then check the fluid level. do not overfill this can cause damage to seals and result in trans failure alltogether. good luck

nice truck!you need to go to the junk yard and pick up a dip stick tube.that way you know when you got it full.if you didnt drop the pan then it shouldnt take that much.you put 5 qts. in?just put,ill say a pint in a little at a time,and keep trying it.but get that tube you need.

You need to drop the pan and do a regular service. Then you can put 5 quarts in and be pretty close. You really should get that tube replaced.
